Only call him once
The RRR wonât work if you repeat it. That is why it is so important that you do this when you are sure that your dog will come to you. Once your dog gets to you the important stuff starts. Letâs go to the next step.
Reward: The Important Part
Now is the time to call on your acting talent. It is your job to convince your dog that he has just done a miraculous thing. Keep a picture in your mind of your dog chasing a cat and racing toward a busy highway. You have seconds to respond. You call out your RRR. Your dog spins on a dime, tears back to you and skids to a halt in front of you. How would you reward that? That is how you will reward these three, little recalls your dog does in the house each day. As your dog starts to you or turns toward you, use your reward marker. Click or call out âYESâ enthusiastically. Encourage him all the way to you by body posture, voice and action. Scoot down, clap, cheer. Let you dog know during every step he takes that you love it when he comes to you.
You want your dog to come all the way in to you and then stay there when he gets there. Remember that you may have to use this in an emergency, so you should be able to get you hand on his collar if necessary. Use food to start your reward. Feed him in close to your body while you touch his collar. You can continue using food or you can move to other activities that your dog enjoys. Play frisbee, ball, play tug, give a back or tummy rub, go for a walk or a ride. Save special treats that your dog doesnât usually get. Anything that your dog loves to do, save it and associate it with the RRR. Each time you call, reward for at least 30 seconds and, preferably, much longer.
If you do this well, within a few days your dog should be charging to you enthusiastically when he hears the RRR signal. In two weeks he should be a recall fanatic. You may find that he is always looking at you, hoping youâll call. You should also notice a difference in your everyday recall. If you are not seeing great improvement read the next section carefully.
RRR Review
Reward all recalls...reward the RRR the best.
If you have to do something your dog doesnât like go and get him instead of calling him.
Practice 3 times a day.
Be 100% sure he will come to you.
Only say it once.
Reward hugely with sincere appreciation.
With all this reward wonât my dog get fat?
When you use food as a reward, it is not the quantity thatâs important, but rather the quality and how the food is used. Food by itself is a powerful reinforcer, but it can be incredibly effective when paired with other reinforcers.
It is very important to use healthy treats when you are using food as reward.
